My attempt to procure a Syrian visa at the border failed. Apparently four days prior a new policy had been handed down: US nationals must apply for a visa at home, or contact the Syrian embassy in Beirut. I returned to Beirut, went to the embassy this morning, and was told the visa would take 25-30 days processing. This is a serious bummer, no Syria or southeast Turkey for this trip. Tomorrow morning I fly to Istanbul. Positive side to this: I get to see my girlfriend two weeks early. Traveling this summer has made me realize that the persons next to you are more important than where in the world you are.

I am bummed that you aren’t going to Syria, but happy that you get to see your girlfriend. Heck, maybe I will get to Syria before you at this rate!
Yeah it is a bummer, but Istanbul seems great
